Haven Learning Program and Curriculum

While partnered with Prenda, we currently offer several applications that teach math and English in different ways depending on the learner. Our staff is trained in both traditional and common core math, and we supplement learning with different game-themed programs like Prodigy, iReady, CodeMonkey, and EPIC Reading.

The science and social studies portions of the curriculum are taught with a combination of kinesthetic, visual, and auditory methods. Varying by grade level, we learn together about the world around us, how it works, and examine our past with inquiry and skill mastery based learning models.

Every month of the school year we learn about a new country. Together we learn about the culture, social structure, and cuisine from that country and at the end of the month sample a drink and dish from that country. Once a week we learn and practice a language, driven by student choice, and encourage speaking to each other in that chosen language for that learning hour.

Once a week we will explore different life skills throughout the year. From fundamental budgeting and banking to cooking and sewing, we explore the many different useful skills and trades to fuel student inquiry and exploration.

We help our learners handle their feelings, get along with others, and make good choices. This in turn helps them understand their emotions, build positive relationships, and solve problems effectively. We give them tools to recognize different emotions and how we may present them in a healthy way. It is an important skill for both school and life.

Following a core tenant of the Prenda Microschool model, we have our learners start every day with a journal prompt. Each journal prompt changes to the theme of the day, in the following order; Community, Autonomy, Mindset, and Purpose.
